The Boone Service League will hold an afternoon of fashions, food, entertainment and shopping with its annual Spring Benefit 2010 on Saturday, May 15.

The league's annual Spring Benefit will be held at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock at 11 a.m. "The event is designed to provide an entertaining afternoon for friends, couples, or individuals. There will be a little something for everyone ... a silent auction with items from the High Country and beyond, a fashion trends show, and a live auction," a spokeswoman for the league said.

The event will begin with a silent auction and raffle, followed by a live auction during the fashion show. Various items, services, gift certificates, vacations and more from the High Country and beyond will be up for grabs at this year's auction.

"This year's fashion show will spotlight an assortment of everyday, casual and fine fashions adorning our area stores," the spokeswoman said.

Six featured stores will focus on the latest trends for summer 2010. Stores include: Belk, Mast Store, Doncaster Outlet, South's and Footsloggers. "Be sure to keep an eye out for many of the High Country's celebrities who have volunteered their time to model for the event," the spokeswoman said.

This event is Boone Service League's largest fundraiser. Through this and other events such as Holiday Market, pictures and gift wrap, the organization is able to offer assistance that reaches many people in the High Country areas of Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties, she said.

The Boone Service League provides scholarships for rising college freshmen each year. The organization also provides assistance for general operating funds and special projects for local nonprofit organizations that operate in the High Country.

Some organizations that have benefited from its grants program in the past have been the Department of Social Service Foster Child Program, Habitat for Humanity, Hope Pregnancy Resource Center, Hospice, Hospitality House, New River Behavioral Health Care, OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter), Parents As Teachers, The Playhouse, Rainbow Center Landship House, Watauga County Schools, Watauga Education Foundation, Watauga County Humane Society, WAMY, WeCan, and other groups.

Members are involved in hands-on service projects such as Meals on Wheels, Adopt-a-Street and Habitat for Humanity.

Individuals in need may apply for assistance from the Boone Service League.

"This organization strives to live up to our motto, a Heart for the High Country, as we provide assistance through a number of channels. We are proud that our organization keeps all the money that we raise in the High Country and provides an opportunity for women in the area to show how much we care about our community. This year's grants and scholarship recipients will be honored at the upcoming event on May 15," the spokeswoman said.

"The success of this event would not be possible without all of our supporters who donate to this event," she said.

"Gold level partners," who donated greater than $700, include: Carroll Leather Goods, Deer Valley, Allen Wealth Management, ASU Athletics, Debbie DeVita Photography, Belk, Wachovia, Mast General Store and Ribbon Enterprises.

"Silver level partners," who donated $300-$699, include Echota, Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, Appalachian Ski Mountain, The Dandelion, Hawknest, Best Western Blue Ridge Plaza, Jonathan Burton, Boone Dermatology, Emily Angle Photography, David Yates, ASU Arts and Cultural Programming, RBC Bank and Best Cellar/ Inn at Ragged Gardens.

Tickets for Taste of the High Country are now on sale. Tickets are $35 and include lunch, a live and silent auction bid number, entertainment, admission to the fashion show and a treat bag filled with many sample items and coupons from High Country businesses. They may be purchased from any Boone Service League member or online at
"Get your ticket early, because space is limited to just 100 tickets this year," the spokeswoman said.
