App State Cycling hosts Road Race Weekend
This weekend, Appalachian State University Cycling will host a
number of cycling events, culminating with the Windy Gap Road Race this Saturday, March 22.
The competition kicks off with the Windy Gap Road Race, held on a 10-mile loop in eastern Wilkes County that includes a substantial 2.3-mile climb gaining 600 feet, with a technical descent.
The race will be contested beginning at staggering times in four separate men’s divisions and three women’s divisions, with first-race registration beginning at 8 a.m. and races beginning at 9 a.m.
Entry fee for Windy Gap Road Race is $20, and athletes must pre-register this and each weekend event by visiting http://www.pre-reg.com. Check-in closes 30 minutes prior to each race. One-day USAC licenses will be available for $15, with a $3 day-of-registration fee. Races will be held under all USAC and ACCC rules.
The weekend’s excitement continues later in the day with Old 60 Team Time Trial. Team Time Trial course is a 9.5-mile trek out and back on Old 60 Road, with mild, rolling hills with one short gradual climb and descent each way.
Check-in for the race opens at 2:30 p.m. and will close 30 minutes before each of the staggered races contested in four men’s and three women’s divisions. The first time trial will begin at 3:30 p.m., and teams will begin at two-minute intervals, with five minutes between each category. Entry fee for this event is $12 per rider.
Concluding the weekend this Sunday, March 23, will be North Wilkesboro Criterium, as four men’s divisions and three women’s divisions will race along a Wilkes County course with a punchy climb and eight separate turns.
Entry fee for the criterium is $15 per rider, and the race will be contested, beginning at staggering times, starting at 9 a.m. in four separate men’s divisions and three women’s divisions, with check-in registration beginning at 8 a.m.
