From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, the annual car show, motorcycle ride and barbecue lunch to benefit Appalachian Senior Programs, which includes Senior Companions and Foster Grandparents, will be held at Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap.

Monies raised at this year’s event will be used to help maintain the match required for the program’s grant that helps provide meal and travel reimbursement for its senior volunteers.

Health Care, Too

“We are excited to be adding a health care component to our event,” said Debbie Wellborn, director of the Senior Companions program. “We are working with Appalachian Regional Healthcare System to conduct health screenings with a variety of options available.”

Those include:

Head and neck screenings (free) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., conducted by Melinda Lada, M.D., from Appalachian Regional Adult and Family Medicine, in conjunction with the Seby B. Jones Cancer Center.

Blood pressure and body mass index; blood work with packages available from $10 to $45 (complete blood count, lipid panel, cholesterol, prostate specific antigen, etc.)

Most of the tests require fasting, and all require appointments (8:30 to 10:45 a.m.) made prior to the event by calling (336) 846-4898.

Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registration stats at 9 a.m. and costs $10 per car or truck, $20 for motorcycles with one rider and $25 with passenger. Motorcycle registration includes one T-shirt, one meal and a ride to begin at 10 a.m.

Trophies will be awarded at 1 p.m. and will include “People’s Choice” for both autos and cycles.

Barbecue plate lunches, prepared by Big Mo’s BBQ, will be available at 11 a.m. for $8 each, which includes pork, baked beans, slaw, roll, dessert and drink.

Kids’ hot dog lunches will also be available for $5.

And More

Items for personal use or gifts, new and slightly used, will be available during the silent auction. Entertainment includes live music, courtesy of well-known entertainer Wayne Henderson, along with Georgia Donour and Richard Greer.

Laurel Springs Baptist Church is located at 7504 U.S. 421 in Deep Gap. For more information, call (828) 262-1330.
