ASU Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble perform Feb. 24
The Appalachian Symphonic Band and the Appalachian Wind Ensemble perform Feb 24. The 8 p.m. performance will be held in Broyhill Music Center"s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.
The symphonic band is conducted by Dr. Scott C. Tobias, and student conductor Justin Hammonds. The band will perform "The Red Machine" by Peter Graham, "God of Our Fathers" by Claude T. Smith with Hammonds as conductor, "Reflections" by Darren Jenkins and "Scootin" on Hardrock" by David R. Holsinger.
The wind ensemble is conducted by Dr. John Stanley Ross. Dr. Andrea Cheeseman is guest clarinetist. Guest conductors are Dr. Jay Jackson, associate dean of Appalachian"s Hayes School of Music, Donald Peach and graduate student Lester R. Turner.
The ensemble will perform Wagner"s "Elsa"s Procession to the Cathedral," Ralph Vaughan Williams" "English Folk Song Suite," Carl Maria Von Weber"s Concertino, Op. 26," Sousa"s "The Free Lance" conducted by Jackson, Bach"s "Prelude and Fugue in G Minor" conducted by Peach and selections from "The Danseyre" by Tielman Susato.
Cheeseman is associate professor of clarinet at Appalachian. She has served on the faculties of Delta State University, Alma College and Hillsdale College. She has performed for the College Music Society annual meetings, Montana/Idaho Clarinet Festival, Michigan Contemporary Clarinet Festival and Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium. She has been a regular performer at the Delta State University Electroacoustic Juke Joint Festival. In the summer of 2003 Cheeseman was named first runner-up in the Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition.
Peach is a retired instrumental music educator. He was the director of bands and music coordinator at Hickory High School and band director at Lincolnton High School, where his bands received numerous superior and excellent ratings. He has served as an adjudicator and presented various band clinics and workshops throughout the United States. He is assistant director of the Spirit of America National Honors Band and Freedom Singers, which performs throughout Europe in the summer.
