When I heard that Bobby Jones Sr. of Boone had passed
away, I was terribly saddened, like much of Watauga County.
As I thought of his precious family, I also thought of the last
time that I had seen Bobby and his wife, Georgia. Just a few weeks
earlier, they both came into the newspaper office with big smiles
and eager, as always, to fill a request of a friend. On this particular
occasion, they brought to me recipes for our holiday tab, but
they also shared a storehouse of memories and photographs of old-timey
winters in the High Country that we needed for our Winter Times.
Coincidentally, both issues that they helped me with hit the stands
in the same week of his death.
His favorite recipe, however, did not make it into
the special section along with several others, Im told,
due to limited space, but now, Im glad that it didnt.
It might have gotten lost between the cakes and candies. As I
recall seeing the tears well up in his eyes as he told me how
he was given the recipe I know that it meant
more to him than a simple holiday dish. To Bobby Jones, it was
the recipe for life. I wrote this as it was given to me
by the Holy Spirit, he told me that morning. It is my hope
that you will honor the memory of this special friend by applying
it to your life, as well. (See pages 108-109 of Winter Times for
Jones cold weather memories.)

Mountain-Mover
Dish
Mountain (need or problem)
Faith: full cup mixed with belief, or at least as much as a grain
of a mustard seed
Prayer: your private prayer about the mountain or peoples
prayers (who knows about the mountain) - friends or even strangers
(the more the better).
Gods Grace: (special ingredient) not found in stores. Free
and undeserved, adds strength!
Unwanted Ingredients: Disobedience, unbelief, pride, unforgiveness,
selfishness, idols (as little as possible, hopefully none)
IIn your heart shaped bowl, place your mountain.
Add prayer (the more the better). Also add faith, only with belief,
and at least as much as a grain of mustard seed. Mix well. Do
not use unwanted ingredients.
Just in case, and using the Holy Spirit within you
as a strainer, strain out all unwanted ingredients. Still using
your heart bowl, stir all strained ingredients thoroughly
until everything is turned over to God.
Bake at Gods will and in His own time. If you get in a hurry,
just wait! Maybe four days or maybe even more. When ready, your
mountain, your need, blessing or whatever the dish
might be, will be served and you will receive - In Gods
own time, on time.

Here are a couple of Mrs. Jones recipes,
used many years ago by her late mother, Elfa Greene Smitherman.
Blackberry
Pudding
1 cup blackberries (or 1 can drained)
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons buttermilk
1 egg
1 cup self-rising flour
Spice to taste (Allspice or Cinnamon)
Stir all the above up together and bake in a well greased
dish, 11x7x1.5 inch at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Check it
after 30 minutes. Let cool. Good.
Topping
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks (keep whites to beat for the top)
2 1/2 cups milk
5 tablespoons self-rising flour
Cook on low to medium heat until thick and put on top of
cold cake. Keep it refrigerated. Put on whipped egg whites and
brown under broiler.

Butterscotch
Pie
1 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons cream or milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
In cast iron large frying pan use a whisk to stir while cooking
on medium to low heat, stirring some until it forms a soft ball
when a little is dropped into cold water.
Have this part done when the above is done. Mix this up in a bowl
and add to mixture in cast iron pan when it is done:
1 cup milk or cream
6 tablespoons flour
1 egg yolk
Cook all until it reaches the thickness you want.
