Hats Off To Children’s Playhouse!

I’m taking a brief detour this week as I pay tribute to the fine folks at the Children’s Playhouse in Boone for an amazing – and quite successful - effort to bridge the High Country communities, families and organizations through their first ever Great Friend to Families Luncheon and Award ceremony on last Friday.

What an honor it was to be among those individuals nominated for the award. I am still humbled beyond description to have had my name placed on a long list of community activists, many who (way more than I!) give of their time and talent to make a difference in the lives of local children and their families.

We were all treated like royalty during last week’s luncheon/presentation and for that, I say a very sincere Thank You to Kathy Parham, Playhouse Director, her board members and all who made the occasion such a special one, indeed.

Most of all - I congratulate each of my fellow nominees and especially Judith Winecoff, recipient of the inaugural Great Friend to Families Award, for making an indelible impact on the High Country.

Many of us in the audience were brought to tears (with a lot of smiles in between) as we listened to special guest speaker - the amazing, highly entertaining, heart-string-pulling Sheri Lynch, co-host of “The Bob and Sheri Show” as she recanted her turbulent life story. It was like she took the first 30 years of my own life and made it hers – and I told her so – except her story unfolded in the mid-west while mine happened in Crossnore. Anyway, what we endured miles apart and several years ago connected us for just a brief moment on Friday and I am grateful for that opportunity.

Kathy Parham and her folks sure know what they are doing at the Playhouse –and I applaud them once again.

My highly deserving fellow nominees for the award, in addition to Winecoff, were: Cynthia Brown-Greer, Laurie Cimino, Lindsay Cobb, Doug Galke, Kaaren Hayes, Karen James, Natalie Lewis, Karee Mackey, Todd Nolt, Jane Penley, Denise Presnell, Jan Rienerth, Robin Triplett, Mary Willis.

And now, for a treat of your own, shared by Heather Young, one of our monthly columnists for All About Women magazine, who says, “With this easy Paella, you’ll feel like you have been transported to Spain. Great for a romantic dinner for two or a gathering with friends – they are sure to be impressed by the delightful blending of flavors. Pair with the same Chardonnay used in the dish.”

Shrimp & Sausage Paella

½ lb medium-sized shrimp – shelled and deveined
½ package smoked turkey sausage – thinly sliced
1 large package yellow Rice
1 green pepper – julienned
1 red pepper – julienned
½ large onion – julienned
6 cloves of garlic – thinly sliced
1 cup Chardonnay
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup seafood broth
¼ cup cilantro – finely chopped
Lime – sliced
1 Tbsp. olive oil
½ tsp fresh ground pepper
Salt – to taste

Preheat oven to 350°F. On stove top, in a three-inch deep cast iron pan (or other deep pan that can go from stove top to oven), sauté the onion, peppers and garlic in olive oil until onion is translucent. Add sausage and continue to sauté for five minutes. Add package of rice and stir well. Add wine and broth. Add pepper and salt to taste. Stir well. Bring liquid to a boil. Move pan to preheated oven and place on lowest rack. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove pan from oven and stir to distribute rice. Return to oven and bake for another 30 minutes. Again remove from oven and add shrimp by lightly pushing them into top of rice. Bake for an additional ten minutes. Prior to serving, top with cilantro and garnish with slices of lime.
