'Devil' delivers close-quartered thrills

Maybe it's because M. Night Shyamalan didn't direct, more so because he didn't write, and further more because he apparently only conceived of the story, but 'Devil' is a surprisingly tense thriller in the vein of horror-meets-whodunnit.

'The American' delivers quiet suspense

'Piranha' remake a bloody good time

'Piranha 3-D' is like a Roman orgy of cinematic decadence, a gleefully gratuitous gore- and flesh-fest that knows its place and, surprisingly, does not bite.

'Scott Pilgrim' wins the day

Scott Pilgrim represents one of director Edgar Wright's bolder moves, a headfirst trip into its characters' fantastical interpretation of reality, infused with video game lore and comic book know-how, where stylized fights come out of nowhere, defeated villains burst into coins, and enough points earn a much-needed 1-up.

'Expendables' fun but forgettable

Everything about Sylvester Stallone's testosterone-fueled, ultra-violent The Expendables is over the top, and not in that Stallone arm-wrestling sense.

Fun time with 'The Other Guys'

Directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman), The Other Guys is genuinely funny, its experienced stars and writers (McKay and Chris Henchy) working in hilarious harmony to deliver laughs aplenty - more than anyone would expect from a summer comedy.

'Sorcerer's Apprentice' low on magic

For a movie about magic, Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice is like a hat without a rabbit - no magic, but hey, nice hat.

'Predators' is old-school fun

Most action directors seem to take the term "fast-paced" too literally, making sure their shooting style mirrors the quick-moving narrative. Not director Nimrod Antal, who has made an old-school, action-packed, suspenseful and, most importantly, fun sequel in Predators.

'Last Airbender' breaks wind

Despite decent special effects and some colorful closing credits, Airbender is pure "B," falling in that "so bad it's good" category, the same reserved for ironic viewing and homespun riffing - funny, but in the wrong ways.
