'True Grit' another gem from the Coen Bros.

As soon as the first trailer hit screens some months ago, it was obvious the Coen Brothers' adaptation of "True Grit" would be unlike the classic western ...

'The Fighter' is a winner

frank@mountaintimes.com

It's a classic underdog story, one where you probably know the ending before you've seen the beginning, but, thanks to...

'Tron: Legacy' a visual feast, not much more

Let's face it: The original 1982 "Tron" was a special effects showcase.

'Narnia': Return to Average

C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia" is one of the most beloved series of children's books of all time.

The film adaptations, however, just don't seem to be catching on. Though well made and generously budgeted, the series just doesn't have that epic sheen, that sense of wonderment that can engross an audience and draw one into the story.

'Tourist' a dull vacation

There's little to be gained from "The Tourist." What it lacks in interest, it tries to compensate with sheer star power, and miserably at that, as stars Johnny Depp and Jolie share the kind of chemistry typically found near time clocks - they're ready to call it a day.

'Burlesque' same old song and dance

"Burlesque" could be called a concept film in the loosest sense. The concept? Christina Aguilera and Cher can sing and dance.

'Love and Other Drugs' may cause drowsiness

"Love and Other Drugs": Side effects may include drowsiness, apathy and tedium. If these side effects persist, consult a better movie.

A 'Tangled' Delight

Disney makes the best of a hairy situation with "Tangled," a beautifully animated and witty take on the classic Rapunzel fairy tale.

'Next Three Days' gripping and suspenseful

"The Next Three Days" is a gripping suspense drama, combining themes of morality and rationality with the timeless intrigue of a prison break. Well-acted and effectively shot, its narrative shortcomings are overshadowed by standout performances from Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks.

New 'Potter' an effective sequel

"Deathly Hallows" is one of "Potter's" more bittersweet entries - bitter in the sense that it's somehow devoid of the inherent wonder and, well, magic of its predecessors; but sweet in that its actors have literally grown into their roles, delivering emotional and thoughtful performances fitting for the material.

'Unstoppable' not unwatchable

Director Tony Scott continues his love affair with Denzel Washington and errant trains in "Unstoppable," the latest Scott-Washington collaboration since a strangely bearded John Travolta took "Pelham 1 2 3."

'Skyline' hilarious in all the wrong ways

The opening scene of "Skyline" shows a woman vomiting, perfectly setting the tone for the next 90 minutes.

'Due Date' just another calendar item

'Due Date' is sporadically funny at best, in what boils down to a vulgar and heartless retread of John Hughes' classic, 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles.'

'Megamind' enjoyable for all ages

Superb voice acting, excellent animation and multigenerational appeal save DreamWorks' latest animated adventure, 'Megamind,' from computer-generated obscurity.

'Paranormal Activity 2' more of the same

'Paranormal Activity 2' is basically the same movie as the first, only this time there's a baby, a German shepherd and a comically menacing robotic pool cleaner.

'Hereafter' a thoughtful drama

Funny enough, whenever I hear "Clint Eastwood," I think of the subway scene in 'Crocodile' Dundee 2, where star Paul Hogan is mistaken by a couple Japanese tourists for Clint Eastwood.

Red a refreshing action-comedy

Bruce Willis shooting things doesn't really scream original.
