Sidewalk Café opens its doors to Boone
New Market Center just got a new addition to its selection of eateries with Sidewalk Café, dressed as an old time soda shop and burger joint.
Sandwiched between Jersey Mike’s Subs and Mountain House at 125 New Market Centre, Sidewalk Café is an indoor and outdoor family-friendly restaurant with hot dogs, burgers, salads and more, with 16 homemade ice cream flavors on display. But one of manager Jeff Austin’s biggest attributes to promote is what he said are reasonable prices “for the economy being so bad as it is.”
“We run specials on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” he said. “It’ll be really good for the kids, like high school kids and college kids, wanting to come in and save a little bit of money and get … a good meal at a reasonable price.”
The restaurant opened about two weeks ago and features nine varieties of cheeseburgers made with fresh ground beef, Austin said. “All of our hamburger we hand pack everyday fresh, and it comes from Boone,” he said.
Aside from the restaurant’s prices, Austin said the quality of its burgers sets Sidewalk Café apart from other restaurants.
“I think the No. 1 thing is the fresh ground beef and real good burgers,” he said. “I mean, everybody ought to try one. Most places, like fast food places … they don’t have fresh ground beef, versus we do, and I think that’s the biggest difference.”
And while Boone seems to have made an unofficial transition to frozen yogurt in the past year, Sidewalk Café puts its homemade ice cream out for customers to see and decide if they want to finish their meal with a banana split, milk shake or other variation of the frozen treat.
“A lot of people don’t offer ice cream,” Austin said. “They offer the yogurt, frozen yogurt, which a lot of people like, but a lot of people still like ice cream, too.”
The store window’s advertisement for hot fudge cakes attracted Chris Morales and Justin Vickers, who work down the road from Sidewalk Café at Modern Toyota of Boone, to give the new restaurant a try.
“It’s a nice place ... it looks good,” Morales said. “It’s close to work, so we can get right here.”
The business’ proximity to Regal Cinema 7 has the potential for late-night customers on the weekend, Austin said.
“I think a lot of people will catch on from the movies,” he said. “We’re open on the weekends until 10 p.m. if they wanted to get some ice cream after the movies and come down here ... you could get ice cream instead of having to drive all the way across town to get it.”
Sidewalk Café is open Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday, from 1 to 9 p.m.; and closed Mondays. For more information or to place an order to pick up, call (828) 264-1592.
