The Art of Crafts

Woodworker Jeff Neil, of Gray, Tenn., taps small copper nails into a newly formed oval box. His boxes are inspired by Shaker-made bent-wood boxes and adorned with designs inspired by traditional quilt patterns. He will demonstrate his craft methods today and Friday on the front porch of Flat Top Manor on the Moses Cone Estate in Blowing Rock.

Many visitors have expressed dismay that the Blue Ridge Parkway will not have ranger-led nature talks and hike this summer.

The cancellation of the popular series is due to the federal sequestration and budget cuts at the National Park Service.

Those visitors might be surprised to learn that those budget cuts have not impacted the craft demonstrations at the Parkway Craft Center at the Moses Cone Estate.

That’s because the craft demonstration series is not funded by the NPS, but rather by the Southern Highland Craft Guild and its members.

The 2013 craft demonstration series started earlier this month and will continue through Thanksgiving. The artisans and craftspeople will give their demonstrations in the screened-in portion of the front porch of Flat Top Manor at the Moses Cone Estate.

Craft demonstrations take place from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. and are closed for lunch at the demonstrator’s discretion.
