Spring Draw-A-Thon March 25-26
The second annual Spring Draw-A-Thon returns to Appalachian State University Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, to celebrate and promote drawing, creativity, spontaneity and artistic collaboration.
Students, professors and local artists (of all levels and ages) are invited to gather at Appalachian State University's Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA) to draw from life models during a two-day event with the goal of creating a casual, fun atmosphere that is open to the curious novice, the devoted expert and every level in between.
The Draw-A-Thon experienced great success during its inaugural event. Lily Lane, a participant in last year's event, said, "It was amazing - a great connection with the community."
Attendees will have the option of drawing from life models (who will pose in rotation throughout the event), collaborating on a wall mural, working on personal sketches or drawing projects of their own designs. This two-day event will include many special model sessions that will be "all audience friendly," and a Portrait Drawing Session on Saturday afternoon from 2-3 p.m. with a special guest.
In addition, the second annual Spring Draw-a-Thon will be opening in the Mayer Gallery this year that will be set up with models and multiple activities for children of all ages. Further details will be made available in March 2011.
The Spring Draw-A-Thon runs from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The closing reception takes place Saturday at 5 p.m.
There is no admission charge, and visitors are welcome to stay the entire time or come and go as they please.
Registration is not required, but encouraged. To register, contact TCVA's visitor and member services at (828) 262-3017. Additional information and an event schedule may be found at http://www.tcva.org.
Event sponsors include Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, Ingle's Market, Lowe's Foods, Harris Teeter, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Mountain Bagels, Stick Boy Bread Company, Espresso News, TCVA and the ASU Department of Art.
Spring Boone Handmade Market
Running Sunday, March 27, from 1 to 5 p.m., the Handmade Market is presented by the Arts Management Organization (AMO), an active ASU student club, and is sponsored by the TCVA.
Emerging and established artists of the High Country are planning to sell their locally homemade goods at this indoor arts market. These local artists will be selling everything handmade from sweet treats to jewelry, sculpture, pottery, various arts and crafts and more.
All vendors accept cash and checks, and some vendors are able to accept credit cards.
After the immense success of the market's inaugural spring season, AMO wanted to continue to present this one-day market that would support local artists and their handmade goods that are prevalent in the area.
This event not only supports the High Country's local art scene, but acts as the club's main fundraiser to support similar art events that the club hosts on campus and around town.
