Smith takes top honors at watermedia show
The 2011 annual exhibition of the High Country Watermedia Society opened at the Mazie Jones Gallery located at the Jones House in Boone with more than 30 artists displaying a variety of themes and media.
The show will remain available for public viewing through Aug. 27.
Kate Worm of Hickory served as official juror. She was first-place winner of the 65th annual juried exhibition of the Watermedia Society of North Carolina in 2010. She also teaches classes in the High Country.
She characterized the HCWS exhibit as focusing on an "eye for nature" and praised the participants for presenting such a strong show.
First-place honors go to Pamela Smith of Hickory for "Up, Up and Away." She received $150 for her colorful rendition of the Statesville Balloon Festival scene. The judge complimented the artist for her "sheer guts" and exuberance of color. Visit http://www.robertandpamela.com for additional views.
Second place and $100 were awarded to nature artist Pat Grant of Todd. Created in acrylics, "Afterglow" portrays a local gray squirrel, which visited the artist's studio frequently. Nell Kline of Lenoir garnered third place and $75 for her watercolor, "Untitled," featuring a sparkling crystal bowl with strawberries painted with a dramatic red palette.
Honorable Mention awards were given to Sarah Gilley, Blowing Rock; Judy Prevost, Lenoir; Judy Rider, Hickory; and Cathy Taylor of Lenoir.
HCWS president Gilley expressed appreciation to the Watauga Arts Council's executive director, Cherry Johnson, and visual arts coordinator Teena Cone for support of the annual watermedia exhibition, in addition to the staff at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff in Boone.
