The Watauga County Arts Council will host another Open
Community Art Show, entitled “Seasonal Celebrations,” during December.
“There’s a lot to celebrate in December — Hanukkah, Advent, winter solstice, Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, St. Lucia, Omisoka or New Year’s Eve — or maybe you just celebrate the beauty of the winter season,” WCAC executive director Cherry Johnson said. “Whatever your celebration, we’d like to invite you to share it through the arts.”
Accordingly, artists of all disciplines are invited to interpret the celebrations of the season in their own unique ways. That also includes performing artists, who Johnson said should contact her to discuss how their work can be showcased.
Visual works should be submitted to the Watauga County Arts Council at the Blue Ridge ArtSpace on Friday, Dec. 6, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 7, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.; or Monday, Dec. 9, between 2 and 7 p.m.
There is no charge for entering work. Johnson said artists may submit more than one work of art, but, due to space constraints, it is possible that only work will be exhibited.
The gallery committee reserves the right to make selections, and artistic works must be ready to hang or display.
An application form is available for download at the WCAC’s website, http://www.watauga-arts.org, and applicants are asked to label the reverse of their work as instructed. All works must be original and created by local High Country artists residing in Watauga or an adjoining county for, at least, a portion of the year. Works of art may not exceed 40 inches in any dimension.
In addition, participating artists must be current members of the Watauga County Arts Council. Artists who are not current members may join online at http://www.watauga-arts.org or when they bring in their artwork. Annual membership rates start at $20 for students and $35 for individuals.
The exhibit will run from Dec. 10 through Jan. 6, 2014.
The WCAC also hosts the monthly Second Saturday Celebration of the Arts to showcase the ArtSpace’s gallery exhibitions, and this month’s reception will take place Saturday, Dec. 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
During the time the exhibit is on display, there will be an opportunity for community members and arts patrons to vote on their favorite works. Each vote is a $1 contribution, Johnson said, and patrons may vote as many times and for as many artists as they please. At the Jan. 11, 2014, Second Saturday Celebration, the winning artist from the December exhibition will be recognized.
