Ron Bill oil paintings at ArtWalk
For January's Art Crawl, ArtWalk is featuring Ron Bill, the gallery's newest painter.
Bill took up painting as a leisure activity in 1985. He lives in Watauga County and looks to the local landscape for much of his inspiration. However, he occasionally makes trips to the coast and brings back photographic references so he can paint the sea year round. Ships, seascapes and landscapes constitute his oeuvre with an array of waterfalls, craggy mountain views, lakes, richly textured vegetation and rocky outcroppings, snow encumbered pines and foggy dawns aflame with the gold and pinks of the sun with a masterful handling of light.
Bill employs a combination of blending, stippling and scratching, using oil paints, pallet knife and brush on cotton duck canvas stretched on kiln dried stretcher bars with enough excess for re-stretching.
Most frames are handmade in hardwoods, such as maple, walnut, oak and cherry, and are characterized by the spline that keeps the corners connected. A few frames are double frames which means they can be taken apart to make two frames. Only a handful of the frames are manufactured, and this is reflected in their pricing.
Ron Bill's oil paintings are located in ArtWalk's lower level. With three and a half floors and more than 300 local, regional and national artists, ArtWalk is located at 611 W. King St. (across from Mast General Store) Boone, N.C. 28607. Though ArtWalk is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m, customers may shop all the time at the gallery's online store. ArtWalk continually welcomes new artists of all media and ages to inquire about individual gallery booths for rent.
