Boone Mall’s looking picturesque this month, thanks to the efforts of four area photographers.

Photographers Bob and Sharon Caldwell, Mary Beth Hege and Greg Williams are displaying their work in the mall’s main courtyard, showcasing a selection of familiar faces and places.

Subject matter includes portraits, weddings, brides, children, families and landscapes, but Bob Caldwell stressed, “We’re not out to sell photography here. We’re just showing our work and giving examples of what we’ve done for people locally.”

“We all bring slightly different ideas and looks to the table,” Williams said. “We all have our little niches that we like to specialize in, so I think it’s a really good, complementary look at what’s available locally.”

The Caldwells started photographing in Boone in 1978, and both specialize in portraits, weddings and special events. Bob holds a degree in photography from Randolph Technical Institute, while Sharon is known for her easygoing demeanor with families and brides.

“Some people consider themselves artists in the industry,” Bob Caldwell said. “They really do nice work, and that work should hang in someone’s home well into the next century. And that’s what we hope to do in portrait work, get something that’s not just a snap shot, but something involved, something nice and artistic.”

Hege focuses her work primarily on families, children and senior citizens. Her new passion is photographing babies, she said, perhaps due to the fact that she’s now a grandmother. “What a fun job to get to hold and play with these sweet babies,” she said.

Hege’s also inviting expecting moms to drop by the exhibit to receive a free newborn session and 8- by 10-inch portrait.

Williams holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in photography and said he brings a wealth of experience in lighting and event support to every project. He and his wife, Alice, have shot weddings and portraits in such varied locales as Baltimore, Seattle, Texas, Jamaica and beyond, but now, they’re looking to focus on the High Country.

“That’s my goal for being in this — just trying to create lasting images and lasting friendships,” he said. “That’s what I’m about.”

The group exhibit will be displayed through Feb. 28. Boone Mall is located at 1180 Blowing Rock Road in Boone.
