This week, ArtWalk is featuring a creative mother-daughter team.

Gina and Anahata Katkin began their art-making business, Papaya, in 2003, with greeting cards produced in their dining room using prints from Anahata's journals. Now, they make a multitude of products and reach out to other artists, including Sabrina Ward Harrison, author of "Spilling Open."

Their prints, derived from mixed media collage and digital imagery, contain dreamlike compositions with bubbly, flowing decorative elements and brilliant color combinations making them fun and beautiful, but also meaningful.

While following the lead of the most forward-looking, avant-garde design concepts, the pieces also include culturally heavy iconography and traces of traditional symmetry. Elements of ephemera are placed in an evocative juxtaposition with edgy text alongside motivational phrases. Images from art history, vintage photographs, religious symbolism and Victorian stationary are used next to references to science, machines and contemporary fashion. The combinations are enhanced by the use of rich pinks, greens, ceruleans, oranges and violets.
ArtWalk now offers a wide array of their wall art. Their moderately sized printed panels, which hang from vibrantly colored satin ribbon, make the unique and exciting artworks of Papaya affordable and accessible. High quality, gallery wrapped giclee prints are also available for the more ambitious decorator. "Each piece adds a dash of color and cheerfulness to any room, while also carrying with it touches of culture, modernity and excellent design," a gallery spokesperson said.

The artwork of Papaya is located in ArtWalk's stairwell to the lower level. With three and a half floors and more than 300 local, regional and national artists, ArtWalk is located at 611 W. King St. (across from Mast General Store) Boone, N.C. 28607. Though ArtWalk is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m, customers may shop all the time at the gallery's online store. ArtWalk continually welcomes new artists of all media and ages to inquire about individual gallery booths for rent. For more information, call (828) 264-9998, email ( or visit
