Marta Toran's Yellowfin Jewelry at ArtWalk
This week, ArtWalk is featuring its new jeweler, Marta Toran, from Vilas.
In Toran's childhood years, she never really showed any signs that she would one day be a jewelry designer. From the time she was born until she was a young teen, she wore the same pearl earrings.
When she finally decided to wear something different, Toran became addicted to finding just the right pair for every outfit, and her interests eventually expanded to necklaces and bracelets.
At first, she was content scavenging shops and markets for unique costume jewelry, but one day she happened upon a bead ship in Ibiza, Spain. The shop owner crafted her a pair of earrings while she watched, made from exotic and foreign materials.
Now her passion for collecting has become a passion for crafting. Toran visits every bead shop she comes across and takes special care to find just the right beads for just the right purpose.
Her resulting line of jewelry, called Yellowfin, found its name because of Toran's interest of marine biology, a love of the color yellow, and her childhood years growing up along the Mediterranean coast in a southern Spanish region.
Toran makes earrings, bracelets and necklaces, as well as beaded wine stoppers. The pieces she currently has at ArtWalk include a variety of materials, such as turquoise, silver, coral, lava, glass, bone, ceramic, jade, painted Russian dolls and metal beads from Africa. Toran's goal for her jewelry is to make unique pieces at an affordable price. She usually only makes one or two pieces of any specific design, making these handmade accessories uncommon works of art.
Marta Toran's jewelry is located on ArtWalk's main level. With three and a half floors and more than 300 local, regional and national artists, ArtWalk is located at 611 W. King St. (across from Mast General Store) Boone, N.C. 28607.
