Clay figures representing women's stories and experiences will be part of Looking Glass Gallery's "we have a voice" exhibition Feb. 9 to March 2.

Looking Glass Gallery in Appalachian State University's Plemmons Student Union presents "we have a voice" by Lela Graham.

The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 9 - March 2. A public reception will be held Friday, Feb. 26, from 7 - 8 p.m., also in Looking Glass Gallery. The exhibition is curated by Dianna Loughlin, the gallery's student curator.

Graham's artwork celebrates feminism and is a visual representation of her matriarchal family tree. In many cultures, the ancestry of a family is traced through the female. The clay figures in the exhibition represent a specific woman telling her story and sharing her experiences. These characters and their tales are personal, yet universal.

The exhibition also features a representation of Graham's family history through quilts that have been sewn from small pieces of fabric, such as an old shirt, a party dress or curtains from a house.

One of Graham's great grandmothers and both of her grandmothers were quilters. Graham was fortunate to have her great grandmother in her life until the 6th grade. She never had the opportunity to meet her biological grandmother, whom Graham is named after. These close family ties continually inspire Graham's artistic practices.

The Asheville native received a BFA in printmaking and ceramics from Appalachian. She is currently a candidate for the university's graduate certificate in art education. Graham's work has been in numerous exhibitions including Appalachian Art Expo, the Print Dialog Days student exhibition, the Predator and Prey exhibition in the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio and the Spring 2009 BFA Studio Show in the Catherine Smith Gallery, all at Appalachian. She was a recipient of the Kabatnnik Memorial Scholarship and the 2008 Art Expo Library Purchase Award.
Looking Glass Gallery is located on the first floor of the Plemmons Student Union. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.LookingGlassGallery.appstate.edu.
