The fifth annual Artists in Residence Series features the work of Kyle Keeter from July 10 to 15 at Edgewood Cottage in Blowing Rock. The cottage is located at the corner of Main and Chestnut streets, right in front of the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum and Visitor’s Center.

Visitors can meet Keeter and view his watercolors from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., except Sunday, when the hours are noon until 6 p.m.

Keeter’s paintings and drawings reflect his upbringing in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. As a child, Keeter explored art through drawing, painting, directing Super-8 movies with special effects and creating Halloween costumes.

By his senior year at Watauga High School, his talent was recognized with numerous art awards: Scholastic Gold Key Art Awards, first place in the AAA School Traffic Safety National Poster Contest, a Blue Ridge Parkway 75th-anniversary art award and the Watauga High School senior art award.

Keeter’s travels in Europe with his family exposed him to the works of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance and French Impressionism.

At Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., Keeter’s instructors noted his distinctive style. He further developed his watercolor technique at Ringling and at Parsons School of Art and Design in New York City, where he studied with Beverly Brodsky, an award-winning children’s author and illustrator.

Keeter continued his studies at Appalachian State University, where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art.

Keeter is a regional artist inspired by a reverential feeling for Southern Appalachia, and his work is defined by creativity and attention to detail. Keeter has participated in the Appalachian Summer Festival auction at ASU, donating ink drawings and prints. Keeter’s pen and ink drawings, as well as painting and digital image piece of the Southern Icon Elvis, were recognized with awards at the annual International Art Contest in Memphis.

Keeter worked as an instructor at Caldwell Community College for eight years.

Currently, Keeter is a full-time artist. His fine art prints are available at the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, Iago in Blowing Rock and frame shops in West Jefferson and Lenoir.

The Artists in Residence Series is sponsored by the Blowing Rock Historical Society and funded in part by the Watauga County Arts Council and Grassroots Funds of the North Carolina Arts Council.
Artists will be in residence at Edgewood Cottage everyday but Wednesday through Aug. 19. All of the artwork is original, and most it is for sale. The exhibit is free to the public. Free parking is available behind BRAHM in the parking deck.
