John Richards' Dogs at ArtWalk
This week, ArtWalk is featuring the ceramic and mixed media work of John Richards.
A native of Wisconsin, Richards now lives in Burnsville. Richards comes from a creative family with an artist for a mother and a writer for a father. After earning his BA in English from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., and teaching for a few years, he began taking classes at Pratt Institute in New York City. Since then he has been a practicing artist.
Richards' ceramic dog leash holders have become quite popular this spring with local dog lovers. These cute canine faces in deep relief with a small hook for leashes are small enough to fit on any wall space, below a light switch or next to a door.
They are offered in a variety of colors, including tan, black, off-white and several shades of brown, all dusted in white to bring out the detail of fur. A wide range of breeds are available, including the Labrador Retriever, Schnauzer, Poodle, Chihuahua, Beagle, Springer Spaniel, Collie, Pomeranian, Boxer, Jack Russel, Scotty, Yorky, German Shephard, Lhasa Apso, Cocker Spaniel and Shih Tzu.
Richards also makes small figurines of flowers, bugs, people and animals out of recycled materials, perfect decorations for Earth Day.
John Richard's pieces are located on ArtWalk's main level. With three and a half floors and more than 300 local, regional and national artists, ArtWalk is located at 611 W. King St. (across from Mast General Store) in downtown Boone. Hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
