Area resident and author Al Corum was fired with enthusiasm.

It started in 1984, when he was demoted from his position as dean at Appalachian State University.
This prompted a decade-long legal battle against the University of North Carolina System, which established the “Corum claim,” a legal defense for North Carolina citizens under the state constitution.

When the Supreme Court rejected the state’s appeal, it affirmed that the state simply can’t refuse to be sued by claiming sovereign immunity. As a result, many citizens have gotten their day in court.
Now they can read all about it in Corum’s new book, “Fired with Enthusiasm: Testing Freedom of Speech in the University of North Carolina System.”

Corum will discuss the case and sign copies of his book on Saturday, June 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Watauga County Public Library, located at 140 Queen St. in downtown Boone. For more information, call (828) 264-2905.
