Erick's Cheese and Wine Shop, located in Grandfather Center at the intersection of N.C. 105 and 184 in Banner Elk has opened a tasting room and wine bar next door.

This affords Erick's the opportunity to offer wine by the glass and educational programs, as well as a greater range of beers, accessories and gourmet food products.

"We'll have some seating on the front patio and more inside to provide a more leisurely and comprehensive wine tasting experience," a spokesperson for Erick's said. "Not only will you now be able to sit and relax and enjoy a glass of some of our best wines, we will also offer flights of small pours to compare and contrast."

For example, this would include pairings like syrahs and sauvignon blancs from three different regions, showcasing their unique expressions.

Tasting notes will be provided on all wines poured, and wines will be changed on a frequent basis.

"So keep coming back to try new ones," the spokesperson said.

Tasters will also receive a complimentary sampler Erick's cheese to enjoy with the wine.

The tasting room will be used for structured tastings by visiting winemakers, who will present their latest wines, and classes featuring focused explorations of the wines of the most famous regions around the globe.

The first event is Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 28, with Tony Coturri in the tasting room at 6: 30 p.m.

The grandson of Enrico Coturri and the latest artisan in the family, Coturri is less a wine maker than the caretaker of a small plot of vineyards entrusted to him to farm organically - no pesticides, fungicides or herbicides, no synthetic yeasts or concentrating additives or processes, no added water, sugar or acid, and no non-traditional treatments or artificial manipulation is permitted.

"The Coturri wines are as old-fashioned and traditional as wines can be, and the results are wines of uncompromising purity, freshness, balance and complexity," the spokesperson said.
Six wines will be poured, and cheese and light hors d'oeuvres pairings will be provided. The cost is $25, and reservations are required. To register, or for more information, call (828) 898-9424 or sign up at the store.
