Designs about 'who you are' at Gladiola Girls
To up and coming designer Jaime Melfi, Boone"s more than just the town showcasing her jewelry next week. It"s part of her inspiration.
"I just love Boone," she said. "The feeling in Boone is just something I"ve never felt before. There"s a lot of love in that town."
The mountains are part of what inspired the New Jersey girl to incorporate nature in her designs. It"s where, thanks to Appalachian State University"s apparel and textiles program, she cultivated a love she has always felt for creating.
Since graduating ASU last May, she"s been working to make her dream of having her own fashion line happen. It starts, she said, with this accessory line.
"It"s a vintage rustic feel," she said, "semi-sheik, but kind of funky at the same time."
And it"s not cookie cutter like department store jewelry, she said.
"I love using textiles with metals or silvers with brass, even coppers with brass, just really different, really unique," she said.
And it"s not just jewelry. Think scarves, bags and hair accessories.
"I do like to design things that are a little bit on the funkier side," she said. "If someone isn"t as adventurous in terms of their style, they"ll take a risk on their jewelry style " as opposed to their whole outfit."
To Melfi, who has been sewing and designing since age 8, it"s part of living her passion. And, while she"s determined to punch into the fashion trend, it"s not about what"s in the magazines, she said.
"Fashion shouldn"t be about what you"re wearing," she said. "It should be about who you are."
And she"s showcasing her designs where it all started, her college job at Gladiola Girls. Look for Melfi"s pieces at Gladiola Girls, which hosts a one-day Valentine"s trunk show Feb. 11, from noon to 6 p.m.
Melfi"s designs can be seen at Urban Outfitters and a handful of other select boutiques.
