‘Claire Was Here’ at ArtWalk
Claire Vohman is the artist behind “Claire Was Here,” a line of
whimsical magnets, purses and tea towels that have become popular gift items at the ArtWalk gallery
in downtown Boone.
Vohman is no stranger to Boone, having attended Appalachian State University in the past, but now she lives on a muscadine grape vineyard in Atlanta, Ga. Keeping her company on the vineyard are her cats and two adopted dogs, whose influence can be seen in many of her pieces.
“I always wanted to be an artist but didn’t ‘take the plunge’ until I was 35 years old,” Vohman said. “It took me that long to get confident. I started out with inspirational and humorous reverse paintings on windows, which I still do.”
Vohman takes her hand-drawn and painted artwork and puts the designs onto her magnets and tea towels, even laminating and cutting the magnets herself. Her purses are also made by hand, using recycled fabrics often taken from old shirts.
