Celebrate eARTh Day at Florence
The Florence Thomas Art School is hosting an eARTh Day celebration on Tuesday, April 22, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., for children in grades one through six. Participants will have the opportunity to create three different art projects — all inspired by nature.
“We are very excited to host this special event for our children,” executive director Meghan Minton said. “It will be a fun and creative day for all.”
The day will include botanical collage, felting and weaving, using reeds and other natural materials.
Three accomplished artists will lead the workshops: Jane Munroe Floyd, of Shades of Nature studio and gallery in Mouth of Wilson, Va.; Jane Campbell, a Blue Ridge National Heritage Area traditional artist from Watauga County; and Cathey Purvey, a veteran basket weaving and design instructor from Ashe County.
Floyd has been working with botanical collage art for more than 40 years. For nearly 30 years, Campbell has worked with children and adults at museums, heritage day events, fairs and schools; her work can be found at “Hands Gallery” in Boone. Purvey has taught basket weaving and design for the past 17 years; her baskets are on display in the Florence Thomas Gallery.
“We are very particular about who we have teaching our workshops,” Minton said. “Our goal from the beginning has been to provide affordable professional instruction in the fine arts and heritage crafts in small-class settings.”
Children will be divided into two age groups: first through third and fourth through sixth grades. Space is limited to 12 students per group. Cost is $30 per child, all materials included. Scholarships are available. Additional children’s workshops are offered during the summer months. Florence Thomas Art School is located at 10 S. Jefferson Ave. in West Jefferson.
