The "museum without walls" is about to get them, and soon.

"We're still on target to open fall, 2011," Blowing Rock Art and History Museum (BRAHM) spokeswoman Sunny Townes said.

That means it may be the perfect time to add a BRAHM membership to your Christmas gift list.

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is progressing, already planning programs for this summer, programs like the return of the Thursday lecture series (April through September). Planned lecture topics might include "The Beauty of Cut Glass," "Making Mountain Music," "How to Read a Painting," and Photography as Art."

"These were well-attended last year, and we are looking forward to another summer of educational and entertaining programming, as we build up to our grand opening in October.

It's an opening that, thanks to new windows on the growing structure, seems closer than ever.

Add in new green features, and you have a museum that's not only functional, but sustainable.

Along with windows that "surpass the energy efficiency requirements," the new structure will feature gypsum board walls (with a high recyclable content), closed-cell foam insulation (to offer thermal benefits and humidity control), Marmoleium (similar to linoleum but made from renewable ingredients, used for flooring), Corian countertops (with no heavy metals or carcinogens and a high recycled content), low odor paint and low-flow toilets and urinals.

New members get an all access pass, particularly important next year as the museum's opening brings special members-only receptions. "Your benefits will only increase as the museum gets up and going," Townes said.

The excitement will also increase.

"People are really beginning to be excited," she said. "It's been a process that's been in the works ... for a long time ... our greatest hope is to reach out to people even beyond just Blowing Rock. We want this to be a museum that supports and attracts people from our region, from Boone, from Ashe County, from Avery County, so that's going to be our goal very early on."

Next up on the agenda? An "Ugly Christmas Sweater Party" for members Dec. 8 at 10 a.m., with prizes and refreshments.
