Art in the Park, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, now begins its second half-century this weekend.

Located in downtown Blowing Rock, the monthly event is a six-month series of juried outdoor fine art and craft shows for which hundreds of artists apply each year.

According to organizers, 35,000 attendees are expected throughout the season. Saturday dates for Art in the Park are May 18, June 15, July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5.

Events are held on the top level of the American Legion parking deck on Wallingford Street. Prices for objects, from a handmade postcard to a large piece of furniture, range from $5 to $5,000.

Corporate sponsors Modern Toyota and Modern Subaru of Boone will give away a $100 gift card each month to one lucky visitor to be used to purchase art from a randomly chosen Art in the Park artist.

“We think this is a great event, and we are happy to have the opportunity to be a part of it,” said West Fowler, dealer principal for Modern Toyota and Modern Subaru of Boone.

On Friday evenings before Art in the Park Saturdays, businesses on Sunset Drive (off Main Street) host Sunset Strolls from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Once again this year, there will be free Sunday afternoon Concerts in the Park, sponsored by Paul and Brenda Fairbetter in honor of Paul and Jane Fairbetter. These concerts will be offered May through September, and headliners include Melissa Reaves, The GrayByrds, Pop Ferguson, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Pipe Band and Appalachian State University’s Gospel Choir. Free shuttles to Art in the Park are available Saturday from the Tanger Shoppes on the Parkway and the Food Lion shopping center on U.S. 321.
