Art celebrations continue at Art Cellar
The Art Cellar Gallery’s 20th Summer of Arts Celebration continues this weekend with two events, a reception for the Avery Paint Out and the 20th Anniversary Gallery Bash.
The Avery County Plein Air Paint Out takes place Saturday, Aug. 18, with a wide range of artists spending the day painting along Banner Elk’s greenway trail.
The event is open to anyone who wants to participate, and those interested may register between 8:30 and 10 a.m. the day of. Artists set up along the trail to paint and then end the day with a reception and awards ceremony at The Art Cellar Gallery from 4 to 6 p.m. Prizes have been supplied by Mike Hill’s Purveyors of Art, The Art Cellar Gallery and The Avery Arts Council.
The August Anniversary Gallery Bash takes place at The Art Cellar Gallery on Monday, Aug. 20, and this month celebrates the work of artist Norma Murphy.
Murphy is the first artist represented by Pam McKay when she opened the gallery 20 summers ago. Murphy is well known throughout the state for her range of paintings and particularly for her “ladies at tea” or “in the garden.” She works in oils, watercolors and acrylics, as well as in her popular acrylics and paper on canvas collages.
A lifetime painter, Murphy studied at Berea College, Delaware State University and Appalachian State University. Her work has been included in numerous prestigious exhibitions and publications and is included in corporate and private collections across the Southeast. During the 20th Anniversary Gallery Bash, Murphy will be at the gallery with new collages and to talk with visitors about her work.
