Art & Music in the Park June 11-12
The village of Blowing Rock invites all to drop by for a weekend of art and music, with the 2011 series of Art in the Park and Concert in the Park.
Blowing Rock's Art in the Park, an outdoor fine art and craft show, has a history dating from the early 1960s, when artists living in and around the village would come to the town's park to display and sell some of their paintings or other pieces.
This is the show's 49th anniversary season. Art in the Park attracts artists from all over the eastern U.S. This award-winning series features the works of 90 juried artisans in metal, fiber, watercolor and oil painting, wood, photography, basketry, jewelry, clay, glass and more.
Concert in the Park is a free concert in downtown's Memorial Park. On Sunday, June 12, Concert in the Park will feature The Folsom Prison Gang, a Johnny Cash tribute band.
The June Art in the Park will host six of the 2010 Art in the Park Award Winners at the show. This includes Gordon Batten (clay), Bill & Michelle Lehnert (jewelry) Chris Boone (wood sculpture), Larry Favorite (turned wood), Daniel Cater (clay) and Carolyn Cordell (mixed media).
Like Art in the Park itself, these artists represent a myriad of work and techniques. For example, both Batten and Cater are artists whose work would fall in the "clay" category. However, one glance at their work will tell even a passive observer that the similarities end at the word "clay."
Batten produces functional sinks and dinnerware, using a pottery wheel in his studio in Dillsboro.
Cater, on the other hand, has begun to focus his work toward more sculptural styles, using hand-building techniques. Both were honored at the October 2010 Art in the Park.
The Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce provides free shuttles throughout the day. Just park at Tanger Shoppes on the Parkway or the Food Lion on U.S. 321 bypass, and hop on the shuttle, which will take passengers right into downtown Blowing Rock.
The show is located at the American Legion Grounds just behind Memorial Park, and admission is free. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dates for this year's shows are June 11, July 16, Aug. 13, Sept. 10 and Oct. 1.
Art in the Park is followed on Sunday by Concert in the Park, which features a variety of musical forms in a free concert in Memorial Park's gazebo right on Main Street.
This Sunday's concert features The Folsom Prison Gang, a Johnny Cash tribute band. Since 2007, The Folsom Prison Gang has pleased crowds all over the southeast at many festivals and events with that "boom-chucka-boom" sound that Cash made famous. The band will perform many favorites and crowd pleasers for folks at Memorial Park on Sunday. The concert is free, but people should remember to bring a blanket or chair for sitting.
