Antonaccio fine art at Carlton
An exhibition by local artist Egidio Antonaccio is featured at
the 30th Anniversary Group Exhibition at Carlton Gallery.
A great love of color and the
inspiration from nature are the qualities one observes while viewing paintings by Antonaccio. Born
in Castelluccio, Italy, “Egi,” as he is known, grew up with the strong influence of great Italian
master painters. His artistic talent was recognized and encouraged at an early age. He earned a
degree from the Institute of Fine Art in Castrovillan, Italy, and the Academy of Fine Arts with
Honors in Florence, Italy.
Antonaccio has called North Carolina home since 1981. His
realistic oil paintings of mountain sunlit valleys and shadowy hillsides, paths filled with
flowering shrubs and azaleas, woodland waterfalls with native rhododendron and dogwood, pastoral
farm scenes complete with barn and cows to a softly rendered Grandfather Mountain are testament to
his imagination and talent.
In addition to his oil paintings, Antonaccio also paints
landscapes in bright, strong acrylics, using larger, more courageous strokes. In lieu of brushes,
he applies the acrylic paint with palette knives.
His exhibit, “Realism of Light and
Abstractions – Landscape,” runs through Aug. 19.
It showcases his landscapes in oils on
canvas, depicting the seasonal changes of the mountains – spring blooming dogwood, the lush
greenery of summer, the colors of autumn and the muted light of winter.
Antonaccio’s
paintings in acrylics rendered with palette knives are filled with the flora and fauna known in
the High Country. Daisies, mullen, yarrow, black-eyed Susan and golden rod fill the foreground,
while the colorful background expresses his impressionistic inspiration derived from nature and
the Blue Ridge Mountains.
His colors applied with heavy texture appear abstracted until one
views the painting from a distance, and then the subject matter is clearly
defined.
