This week, ArtWalk is featuring the work of Sugar Grove artist A.C. Brown.

Originally from Norfolk, Va., Brown relocated to Western North Carolina after graduating from Old Dominion University, where she received a BFA with concentrations in painting and education, as well as a BA in art history.

Although her interest in art began with oil painting, she has now branched out into photography and wooden jewelry.

Brown's photography has been displayed at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University during the eighth annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. Pieces have also been displayed in shows at the Nthº Gallery in downtown Boone and the B.J. Spoke Gallery of New York, published in a competition issue of The Photo Review Journal, and won first place in the college division at Stockley Gardens Arts Festival in Norfolk, Va.

Brown predominantly uses black and white photography, and her subject matter includes the decrepit buildings and railways of Norfolk, the architecture of Japan and the foggy fields of the early morning in Watauga County. Lush contrast and subtle evidence of human or animal life ties them all together. Her photography is available as frameable note cards, matted prints, framed prints and framed giclees.
Brown's selection of jewelry is comprised of as much recycled or ecologically friendly materials as possible. The wood is scrap material from a local wood worker's shop and comes in a variety of species, including Nara, Purple Heart, Bird's-Eye Maple, Padauk and Walnut. The leather and silk elements are either remnants or come from second-hand items. Even the beads are secondhand or are purchased locally.

The highlight of her jewelry collection is hand-shaped wooden pendants that are enhanced by gemstones or splashes of color from inlayed silk. A variety of earrings are also offered, with unique combinations of stone, leather, wood, crystal, chain and bone in rustic, yet modern, designs.
A.C. Brown's photographs are located on ArtWalk's lower level, and her jewelry is located on the main level near the register. With three and a half floors and more than 300 local, regional and national artists, ArtWalk is located at 611 W. King St. (across from Mast General Store) in downtown Boone. Hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
